FAQs

What do I need to wear/bring?

Dress in gym clothing that support physical body movements. Track pants/yoga pants are required for bottoms for protective reasons (do not wear shorts as you may accidentally get hit on the legs!). Please wear non-scuff gym shoes that offer proper support for physical activity. Other than that, bring a water bottle, sweat towel and a positive attitude :)

Will fencing gear be supplied?

We will be supplying all basic gear for recreational fencing. This includes sabres, masks, gloves, jackets, and chest guards. This gear has been graciously donated to us by Dynamo Fencing and Cutting Edge Fencing

The classes are at a brewery — will there be drinking involved?

While the classes take place in the back room/event space at Henderson Brewing Co., one free drink token will be given to each participant AFTER the practice ends. There will be no alcohol consumption before or during the class, but participants are welcome to stay and socialize after practice.

How much is each class?

Classes are $30 per person — the fee is required up-front to secure your place in the workshop. LGBTQIA2S+ classes are all Pay-What-You-Can (PWYC) and also require advance registration.

Why is there only a PWYC option for the LGBTQIA2S+ classes?

LGBTQIA2S+ people are more likely to face financial struggles due to systemic discrimination in employment, education, healthcare, and housing. Many experience workplace bias, lower wages, or unemployment—especially trans people and queer people of colour. Family rejection and bullying can lead to higher rates of youth homelessness and disrupted education, limiting future job opportunities. Barriers to affirming healthcare and legal recognition also create added costs and stress. Understanding this disparity and the structural barriers that disproportionately affect queer and trans communities is critical for creating inclusive support systems.

Are classes drop-in or require advance registration?

All classes require advance registration and payment in order to secure your place, as there are limited spots available per workshop.

Do you offer classes for kids/teens?

Currently, we do not offer youth classes, but are planning to expand in the future to accommodate more age groups. If you are interested in enrolling your child in fencing, please shoot us an e-mail to let us know and we'll put you on a list to be made aware when kids' classes will be added to the club — the more interest we receive, the faster we can start teaching your kids fencing!
